La Jolla Country Day boys fall in final of hoops tourney
La Jolla Country Day’s boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Grossmont Winter Classic last week, but fell short in the tournament’s title game.
The Torreys beat Southwest, 61-56, on Dec. 21, outscoring their opponents, 12-7, in the final quarter to break open a tie game. Kai Tuites led Country Day with 15 points, while Sage Burmeister and Max Hershfield each scored 12.
The Torreys advanced to the title game with a 46-43 win over Scripps Ranch on Dec. 22 when Tuites contributed 17 points. But Country Day fell in the Dec. 23 championship game, 93-68, to Foothills Christian of El Cajon. Foothills Christian buried the Torreys with a 31-9 run in the third quarter.
Country Day bounced back with a 61-56 win over Rancho Buena Vista in the Max Preps Holiday Classic on Dec. 26. Frankie Bamford led the way with 22 points, and Alex Perez added 18.
Playing in that same tourney, La Jolla High School rolled to a 63-39 victory over Bakersfield Christian on Dec. 26. John Walsh scored 16 points.
The Bishop’s School topped Carlsbad, 75-53, in the Hosea Hall tournament on Dec. 21. Dominique Love paced the Knights with 25 points, and Maliik Love added 23.
The Knights fell to Marantha Christian, 67-56, in another tournament game on Dec. 22. Stephen Kaiser had 19 points, and Dominique Watkins added 15.
Bishop’s dropped a tournament game on Dec. 23, falling 74-62, to Lincoln. Maliik Love (22 points, 13 rebounds) and Kaiser (18 points, 15 rebounds) each had a double-double.
Girls basketballBishop’s beat Carson, 72-55, in the Vaquero Invitational tournament on Dec. 22. The Knights continued to roll with a 62-52 victory over Alameda in the same tournament on Dec. 23.
Girls soccerBishop’s beat Sacred Heart of La Canada-Flintridge, 1-0, on Dec. 21. Lara Aguilar scored an unassisted goal, and Devan Osegueda made five saves.
