Free Summer Concerts at Scripps Park, La Jolla Cove. Every Sunday afternoon through August 31 listen to live family-friendly music from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Several different bands perform a variety of music. Gift certificates to local activities and restaurants are raffled each week.

August 3 - Corvettes (Doo-Wop/Motown)
August 10 - Westwind Brass (Classical Pop Plus)
August 17 - Benny Hollman’s Big Band Explosion (Big Band Jazz)
August 24 - Yavaz (Latin Jazz)
August 31 - The Heroes (Classic Rock)

Empty storefronts are bad for business. And bad for the communities they serve. We moved to Bird Rock nearly one year ago from the Bay Area and have loved the small town feel of our new community. We love the walkability to shops and restaurants, and the spectacular ocean views. But in our year here, we’ve also seen more barren storefronts and struggling merchants. While I can’t magically make new businesses locate here, I do have some ideas for generating a more businesses that will engage locals and visitors alike to our charming village by the sea. It will take the energy and creativity of our local community, businesses and landlords to make these changes but all are possible.

Art, science and technology converge in San Diego Art Institute’s ‘Illumination’ exhibit

On the evening of Feb. 8, 2020, almost 1,000 art-lovers and techies turned out for the opening of “Illumination,” at San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) in Balboa Park. Subtitled “21st Century Interactions with Art, Science and Technology,” the show paired 16 local artists with scientists from seven different La Jolla-based research institutions to see what kind of artworks could result from their interactions in the fields of Global Health, Climate Change and Sustainability, and Touch-Screen Technology. The artists and scientists seemed to appreciate the opportunity to connect with each other, and an additional 10 artists were invited to create their own works on similar themes.

Let Inga Tell You: Trying my best for the sake of the grandkids

As anyone who has read my column for any length of time knows, I truly believe technology will be the death of me. Probably literally, when I can’t figure out how to call 9-1-1 on my cell phone as I’m having a heart attack. But I do have to admit that my iPhone has given me ways to interact with my young grandchildren that I wouldn’t have otherwise. “Interact” may be somewhat of an exaggeration in the case of the 4-year-old who has on occasion FaceTimed me eight times in a single day just so I’ll appear. As soon as I do, he chortles and hangs up. He just loves the power.
