La Jolla Brownies, Girl Scouts packing care kits for Haiti

On Sunday, La Jolla Girl Scout Troop 3462 and Brownie Troop 3635, along with families and friends from La Jolla Elementary School and Bird Rock Elementary School, are hosting an emergency Care Kit Assembly Party to provide hundreds of care kits to victims of the Haiti earthquakes.

With guidance from Heart to Heart International, the girls, ages 7 to 12, and friends are creating small care kits featuring basic items such as washcloths, soap, hand towels, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes and bandages to be distributed by the organization in Haiti.

Donations for kit contents and cash to cover purchases and shipping are being accepted. Drop them off at studio m/michael spengler photography, 5759 La Jolla Blvd. from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Saturday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., or on Sunday after 2 p.m.

Jen Spengler, whose daughters are in the troops and is organizing the events, said they’ll appreciate donations of any kind: several of the items, a single item or many of a single item, rather than trying to purchase the contents of a complete kit.

They also need a travel-size soap dish and gallon-size sipper seal bags.

In a note she sent to parents, friends and reporters, she wrote: “The assembly of the kits allows the scouts to personally help those suffering in Haiti. This project allows the girls to experience hands-on humanitarian work and puts into perspective how great the needs are in Haiti, when a kit so desperately needed there contains our most basic possessions, which we often take for granted.”
