La Jolla brewer lauded

Head brewer Marty Mendiola from the Rock Bottom Brewery on Villa La Jolla Drive in La Jolla recently competed in the 2010 World Beer Cup, the world’s largest beer competition that takes place bi-annually in Boulder, Colo.

More than 3,400 beers from 44 countries in 90 beer-style categories were entered into the competition, yet only 8 percent — or 270 beers — took home a prize. Mendiola took home three awards for three different beers: a Gold award in the American-Style Amber/Red category for “Rudolph’s Red”; a Silver award in the English-Style Brown Ale category for “Longboard Brown” and a Bronze award in the Irish-Style Red Ale category for “Ragtop Red.”

Mendiola has also taken home nine other awards over the last four years at various national beer competitions.

Other area breweries that picked up awards at the 2010 World Beer Cup include: Ballast Point Brewing Co., San Diego; two for Karl Strauss Brewing Co.; three for Pizza Port in Carlsbad; one for Pizza Port in Solana Beach; one for Green Flash Brewing Co. in Vista; two for AleSmith Brewing Co. in San Diego; one for Breakwater Brewing Co. in Oceanside; and one for The Lost Abbey in San Marcos.
