La Jolla 9’s win Memorial Day all-star tourney
BY MIKE CAMPAGNA
ContributorLa Jolla Youth Baseball 9s All-Star Team went into the Tecolote Memorial Day Allstars Tournament with high expectations.
We went in to the semifinals facing one of three Tecolote teams, winning by a score of 13-0. We then had to play a later game on the same day against our fellow La Jolla team, beating them 10-0.
This moved us into the final day of the tournament on Monday to face the No.1-seeded team, Chula Vista South. We won that game, 7-4, putting us into the Championship game later that afternoon against the number two seeded team, again from Tecolote. This game went five innings before it was officially stopped due to 16-6 score, which gave our boys the victory and the championship.
The boys played a fantastic tournament with great pitching by Ford Eldredge, Conner Noon and Michael Campagna to basically shut out all the teams that we played. The team buckled down with its defense to keep the opponents to minimal runs, while at the same time, having explosive bats by most every player on the team, with two solo-shot homeruns as well — by Ford Eldredge and Gabriel Solis.
It was an impressive win especially because three of the four teams we faced were mostly 10-year-olds. The boys were not intimidated by any means and “mercied” three of the four teams they faced.
This is the start to our 2010 Allstars Tourna-ments. The next round will be June 16th. The boys and their families are excited to get into the next tournament as well as the families. I’m really proud of the boys and how hard they played. They really are a special group of boys.
