Knights top Torreys, Vikings in boys hoops
The Bishop’s School owns boys basketball bragging rights in La Jolla after beating both its city rivals last week.
The Knights toppled La Jolla Country Day, 70-44, on Jan. 20, thanks in part to a 21-point, nine-rebound performance from Maliik Love. Dominique Watkins added 14 points, Stephen Kaiser had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Ryan Chong chipped in with 10 points.
The Knights topped La Jolla High on Jan. 22, beating the Vikings, 51-45. The Knights got 19 points and seven rebounds from Maliik Love, while Dominique Love and Chong each scored nine points.
Bishop’s beat Otay Ranch, 86-51, on Jan. 23, securing its sixth straight victory. Maliik Love totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Kaiser had 18 and 10. Chong chipped in with 18 points, Dominique Love had 13, and Watkins added 11.
Country Day dropped a 55-52 decision to Francis Parker on Jan. 22, despite fighting back from an 11-point deficit starting the fourth quarter. Frankie Bamford led the way for the Torreys with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Watt contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.
La Jolla High School picked up a 58-50 victory over University City on Jan. 19.
Girls basketball
La Jolla dropped a 48-39 decision to University City on Jan. 19. The Vikings bounced back with a 36-30 win over Mira Mesa on Jan. 20.Country Day eased to a 64-31 victory over Our Lady of Peace on Jan. 18. Briteesha Solomon scored 18 points and had nine rebounds, and Ariana Elegado added 14 points. Kaylah Miller chipped in with 10 points.
The Torreys topped city rival Bishop’s, 60-49, on Jan. 20. Solomon had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Maya Hood had 13 points and 10 boards. Miller added 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting. Elaine White led Bishop’s with 19 points, and Sophie Terrassi had 13 rebounds.
Country Day continued to roll with an 84-25 win over Francis Parker on Jan. 22. Solomon led the way with 19 points, Elegado had 17, Hood contributed 15, and Kelsey Plum scored 13.
Bishop’s fell to Centennial of Compton, 67-57, on Jan. 18. Bryn Stark paced the Knights with 19 points in the losing effort, while Alissa Campanero and Briana Martinez each had 11.
The Knights toppled Santa Clara of Oxnard, 64-39, on Jan. 23. Stark had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and White scored 22 points. Campanero chipped in with 12 points.
Boys soccer
Country Day fell to San Dieguito Academy, 1-0, on Jan. 23. The Torreys failed to convert a number of chances, including two penalty kicks.Bishop’s secured a 2-1 win over rival Country Day on Jan. 25. Harrison Flagg scored both goals, assisted by Kyle Jester and Stefano Vidali. Justin Peabody made six saves for the Knights.
Girls soccer
Bishop’s eased to a 6-0 win over rival Country Day on Jan. 25. Francis Harvey scored three times for the Knights, while Devan Osegueda and Coral Hasley combined for the shutout in goal.La Jolla fell to Coronado, 3-1, on Jan. 21. Brianna Champman scored the Vikings’ lone goal.
