Kids Korps’ annual Eco Ball incorporates green solutions

On Feb. 7, Kids Korps held its annual Eco Ball at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall in Sorrento Valley. Organizers said that the one of a kind green event practices its ecological stewardship message in many important ways.

Invitations were printed on recycled paper, biodegradable soy candles and organic linens made with natural fibers and dyes were used and all remaining food was packaged up after the evening and donated to local homeless shelters with flower arrangements donated to local nursing homes and hospitals.

Throughout the evening, guests were given several ways to contribute to the Kids Korps USA, a national organization that provides youth between the ages of 5 and 18 with volunteer opportunities in their community. Kids Korps’ Green Korps program has brought together local leaders and youth to work together to restore and protect our region’s environmental resources since 2007.

The evening began with appetizers, a silent auction and music provided by The Bishop’s School Jazz Quartet. Eco-friendly fashion from clothiers who reduce energy and natural resource consumption was also showcased.

Before dinner and a tribute to Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller, who passed away earlier in the week, proprietors of Milles Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe, Denise and Julien Hug, were honored with the National Leadership Award.

NBC sportscaster Dick Enberg and Channel 10 anchorwoman Kimberly Hunt served as emcees.
