Junior Olympics coming to La Jolla

More than 600 students ages 5-12 from all eight public and private La Jolla elementary schools will participate in La Jolla Kiwanis Club’s 18th annual Junior Olympics on

Sunday at La Jolla High School’s Edwards Stadium.

Highlights of the children’s track and field events include the fastest boys and fastest girls relay team races featuring four members from each participating school. The event will conclude with Fastest Boy and Fastest Girl in La Jolla races.

Ribbons are awarded to all participants and the top three finishers get medals.

This year the San Diego French American School joins The Gillispie School, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, Stella Maris Academy, The Evans School, The Children’s School and All Hallows Academy in event competitions.

“Every year it gets better,” said Avelino Cortina, event chairman. “It’s Kiwanis’ way of giving back to the community via the children, because Kiwanis is all about the children. It’s to thank the families of La Jolla for supporting Kiwanis and making La Jolla a better place.”

Check-in starts at 7:15 a.m. with the events starting promptly at 8:30 a.m.

The event is sponsored by La Jolla Insurance Services.
