Jackson to run for supervisor against Roberts

San Diego Unified School District trustee Shelia Jackson Friday entered the race for county supervisor against incumbent Ron Roberts.

With one week left to file for the June 8 election, Jackson is the only opposition to Roberts so far in the district that covers much of the city of San Diego.

She filed her papers to enter the race late in the afternoon, said Registrar of Voters Deborah Seiler.

Jackson, who had considered running for the office previously, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Longtime San Diego City Councilwoman Donna Frye announced on Wednesday that she would not enter the race.

Bill Horn, the only other supervisor to face re-election this year, is opposed by Tom Bumgardner of Valley Center and John Van Doorn of Encinitas.

The five members of the Board of Supervisors have been together since 1995 and rarely face serious opposition. In the past year, however, they’ve been criticized by some detractors as being out of touch with constituents.

A union-backed proposition was placed on the ballot that, if passed, would make the supervisors subject to term limits.
