International water polo event slated
International water polo competition is coming to La Jolla’s Coggan Family Aquatic Complex June 28 to July 3.
The event, the Women’s FINA World League Super Final, will feature eight teams, all of which had to qualify for the tournament. As of press time, the U.S. team will be joined by Canada and China and possibly Australia, Greece and Hungary. Teams were still competing for the final spots.
“For anyone who likes water polo, this is the highest level international event that will be held in the U.S. in 2010,” USA Water Polo spokesman Greg Mescall wrote in an e-mail. “It’s also great for younger boys and girls that play club and high school water polo to see how it’s done at the Olympic level.”
The players will not be named until Friday, but three area women are in contention: Tanya Gandy, (Rancho Bernardo High/
UCLA) and Kelly Rulon, (University of San Diego High/UCLA) and Forel Davies (Carlsbad High/USC).
Four games are scheduled each day, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The U.S. team will play the 7 p.m. game in preliminary and quarterfinal rounds, which wrap up on July 1. If it is one of the first- through fourth-place teams to make the semis on July 2, it will play again in that time slot.
Four games are set for July 3, beginning at noon, with the final to be played at 4:30 p.m. As part of the final day’s activities, USA Water Polo has planned a fan tailgate.
