Maurice Luque, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman, reported firefighters extinguished a brush fire on southbound Interstate 5 near Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach on Wednesday, May 28. The fire started sometime after 3 p.m.
The one-acre fire was on the west side of the freeway,” said Luque. “It was burning toward homes at the top of the hill. It was put out before we could get out there.”
Luque said the blaze was extinguished quickly, and firefighting units, including a helicopter, were recalled. He added conditions were relatively favorable for firefighters. “It could have been a big deal,” he noted, if weather conditions had been drier, or wind speeds higher.
