Hair event will go after record

The San Diego World-Record Hair Donation Event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 2 in the gym at La Jolla High School, 750 Nautilus St. The event is a Guinness World Record attempt to break the current record in the category of Most Hair Donated to Charity in 24 Hours.

Donors will cut off at least 8 inches of hair to be sent to the national program Pantene Beautiful Lengths to make free wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair from chemo treatments.

Hairstylists from the Paul Mitchell School of Hair Design, Ardis Zhong and the Model United Nations Club at La Jolla High School have put together this event. Donors can choose to donate 8 inches of all their hair or only a section of their hair, like getting layers. Hair must be less than 5 percent gray and not bleached or permanently dyed.

The current world record for the Most Hair Donated to Charity in 24 Hours was set in 2007 in Mississippi from 881 donors — about 107.4 pounds.
