Gynecomastia: understanding male breast reduction surgery
By Stuart B. Kincaid, MD, FACS
What ismale breast reduction surgery
? The procedure is designed to serve male patients with distinctly feminine-looking breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia. According to theAmerican Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
, gynecomastia affects between 40-60% of the male population, and is far more prevalent than many people realize. While a large number of gynecomastia cases are prompted by unknown causes, some factors – including steroids, medications containing estrogen, cancer, reduced liver function and excessive use of alcohol and marijuana – have been linked to male breast enlargement. Regardless of the source, gynecomastia can be safely and effectively treated using plastic surgery techniques. However, it is critical for all prospective patients to consult a board certified plastic surgeon before electing to undergo surgery.Male breast reduction: surgical procedures
Plastic surgeons perform male breast reduction surgery through either liposuction or the removal of excess glandular tissue, and both procedures are safe for most healthy male plastic surgery patients. During the initial consultation, a plastic surgeon will work with each patient to determine the best course of action – and to encourage diet and weight loss as a first step prior to surgery if appropriate. Both liposuction and the removal of excess tissue offer permanent results, and leave the patient with a smoother, firmer chest. The surgery usually takes several hours and is performed under general or local anesthesia. After about one week, most patients can return to their normal activities, and enjoy minimal scarring around the areola that will eventually fade with time.Gynecomastia surgery at the offices of Stuart B.
