Good grief! Jr. Theatre brings Peanuts kids out to play

Lucy, Linus, Snoopy and the rest of the gang will join everybody’s favorite blockhead on stage in San Diego Junior Theatre’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” opening Jan. 8 at Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park.

The musical adaptation of Charles Schulz’s classic comic strips is directed by Junior Theatre Artistic Director Desha Crownover. The show runs through Jan. 24 with performances at 7 p.m. Fridays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. There will be an ASL-interpreted performance on Jan. 23.

In this production, Crownover is dealing with an extremely tall cast: “Our Charlie Brown is 6 feet 8 inches alone!” She said she must get creative with staging so the actors all pass for 9-year-olds.

When the curtain opens, it’s all about Valentine’s Day woes, dog fantasies, crabbiness, baseball and other classic Peanuts topics. Complete with “Happiness” and other familiar tunes, the production is sure to charm.

The cast includes Alex Dunbar (Charlie Brown), Jordan Bunshaft (Snoopy), Marianne Zumberge (Lucy), Lauren Green (Patty), Jordan DeLeon (Peppermint Patty), Kelly Doran (Frieda), Maddie Baldwin (Sally), Mark Barahura (Rerun), Madeline Harvey (Marcy), Chris Huber (Shermy), Austin Klich (Schroeder), Kaleolani Laymon (Woodstock), Rachel Liuzzi (Violet), Robert “Vander” Turner (Linus) and Ben Sutton (Pig Pen).

In the Ensemble are Brittney Aceron, Michael Barahura, Kailey Berry, Brooke Collins, Jenna Dern, Katee Drysdale, Alana Fineman, Danny Helms, Colette Huber, Kate Jamison, Kimberly McVeigh, Sophia Oberg, Casey Purlia Johnson, Ruby Ross, Kayla Solsbak, Claire Sparr, Anna Strickland, Isaac Taylor, Spencer Williams and Brennen Winspear.

Tickets are $8-$14 through the Junior Theatre’s box office at (619) 239-8355 or The show is recommended for all ages.
