Golf movie premiere tied to U.S. Open
In recognition of the U.S. Open scheduled to take place June 9-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course, the La Jolla Town Council, San Diego Parks & Rec, and HBO are presenting a special West Coast premiere of the film “Back Nine at Cherry Hills” June 6 at Ellen Browning Scripps Park.
“We’re just happy with the timing of this that we could add to the festivities,” said David Castro, director, corporate affairs and regional public relations for HBO. “When we first heard about the project, we thought, ‘How great to do this in La Jolla with the U.S. Open.’”
The outdoor film screening, which will begin at sundown, is free and open to the public. The movie will be shown on a 17-by 33-foot screen. In the tradition of other outdoor film fests, HBO hopes residents will bring a blanket, dinner or snacks, and make it a special family evening.
“What’s terrific is we’re taking advantage of a beautiful coast line and beautiful weather and bringing in a family-friendly event,” Castro said.
“Back Nine at Cherry Hills” showcases the 1960 U.S. Open, when Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus battled for the lead.
The film will air June 11 at 10/9 p.m. central.
