The “Jewels of Balboa Park,” aka “San Diego Natural History Museum Glitterati,” gathered for a luncheon at the Grand Del Mar Hotel and Resort on May 10 to kick off the museum’s “All That Glitters: The Splendor and Science of Gems and Minerals,” exhibition and gala. The exhibit opened May 15 and the gala will be celebrated May 22. For tickets, call Rachel De Quesada at (619) 255-0182.
The luncheon was hosted by board member and gala chair Ellen Zinn and acknowledged the role of support from Pam-Slater Price and the Board of Supervisors. The Glitterati will be representatives for the museum during the two-year run of the exhibition, which was developed by the museum’s design team. The show takes visitors through the bling and beyond to see gems and minerals as very rare and ancient byproducts of the forces that have created the landscape, including those here in San Diego County.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for gem and mineral enthusiasts to view an unprecedented assemblage of some of the most exquisite jewelry ever created, as well as luminous gem crystals and sparkling faceted gems.
Visitors will linger over treasures from around the world — rubies and diamonds, emeralds and aquamarines, opals and tourmalines — seeing them not simply as objects to be enjoyed, but as marvels of the Earth.
