General Dynamics lays off 290 workers

General Dynamics NASSCO laid off 290 of its 4,100 workers in San Diego on Monday because of the slumping economy.

In May, the defense contractor — the last major shipbuilder on the West Coast — sent letters to 900 of its 4,100 workers, notifying them that there might be as many as 1,150 layoffs as early as mid-July.

The company was expected to issue a statement this morning explaining why the cuts were not as deep as they might have been, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
