Gathering input on Children’s Pool and dispensaries
By Sherri LightnerCouncilwoman, 1st District
I’d like to start with a huge “thank you” to all our outstanding community group leaders and committee chairs in La Jolla. Several major controversial projects have come through the community recently, and our chairs have done an excellent job shepherding these projects through the community process in an orderly, efficient and fair manner. I know firsthand how difficult your job can be, and I truly appreciate your efforts in giving a strong and effective voice to the community on such a wide variety of issues. Your work does not go unnoticed.
On May 17 at 6 p.m., the City Council will vote on the future management of the Children’s Pool. I have arranged for the council meeting to be held at Sherwood Auditorium at the Museum of Contemporary Art so that all interested La Jollans can attend and provide their input on how this beach should be managed. I am attending several community meetings to gather input from the community on this issue. For more information on the proposals being considered, please visit my website at
La Jolla now has eight medical marijuana dispensaries operating in the Village, Windansea and Bird Rock. The city is continuing its efforts to put new zoning restrictions in place to better regulate these dispensaries. On March 24, the council’s Land Use and Housing Committee approved my motion to strengthen many of the Medical Marijuana Task Force’s recommendations and place restrictions on where the dispensaries can operate.
Our recommendations include requiring that dispensaries be approved by the city’s Planning Commission and be appealable to City Council, restricting the areas where dispensaries can operate to commercial and industrial zones only, and prohibiting dispensaries within 1,000 feet of each other and within 1,000 feet of a school, playground, library, child care facility, youth facility, park or place of worship. The full City Council will be voting on these proposals in the near future.
As always, I encourage you to please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or (619) 236-6611 if I can be of assistance.
