Fire destroys La Jolla Shores home

A fire of unknown cause, which started about 3:30 p.m Thursday totally destroyed a single-family home at 8347 La Jolla Shores Drive.

Maurice Luque, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman, said Engine Company #16, which had been on Mount Soledad, spied the fire in La Jolla Shores and phoned it in at 3:37 p.m.

“They got there in a matter of minutes,” said Luque, who added the blaze appeared to have begun in the rear of the home which had a raised wood deck with a lot of storage underneath. “It spread from the rear of the home into the rest of the house and up into the attic and into a couple of bedrooms. The house is a total loss.”

Luque said when fire crews arrived at the scene they found intense smoke and heat coming from inside.

“When they initially attacked the fire from the front, they could see no further than the hand in front of their face,” he said. “It was that black and that dark in the house.”

The good news, noted Luque, is that the occupants of the home, whom he identified only as a 90-year-old man and his 50-year-old son, were away from the home at the time of the blaze.

Luque said the cause of the fire is under investigation. He added a guest house in the rear of the property was untouched.

No damage estimates were given.
