Festivities at the Zoo

The two-legged animals were dressed to kill for Ritz 2007, the Zoo’s annual Jungle Club Gala, and many of their four-legged friends showed up to entertain the crowd. Animal prints and feather boas were all the rage at this fun-filled fundraiser, chaired by La Jolla’s own Katherine Kennedy and Robert Horsman.

Honorary Chair Conrad Prebys pledged $1 million, if this year’s Ritz raised $500,000 in donations and underwriting - and Zoo supporters came through with flying colors. About 1,100 animal lovers attended, and the $1.5 million raised during the elegant evening was the highest dollar amount in the 24-year history of the Ritz. Proceeds will benefit the new elephant habitat at the Zoo, and La Jollans were among the generous crowd contributing to the gala’s stunning success.

The hard-working committee included Marilynn Boesky, Carol Chang, Jinx Ecke, Kristi Pieper Rossbacher, Dolores Smith, and Dixie Unruh. Other locals in attendance were Jay and Lael Kovtun, Audrey Geisel and Alex Butterfield, Jeanne Jones and Don Breitenberg, Mitch and Dianne Goldman, John and Sally Thornton, Richard Levi and Wanda Kaufman, Chuck and Viviana Polinsky, Valerie and Harry Cooper, Kristi Pieper and Michael Rossbacher, Nancy and Bob Kronemyer, Irwin and Maryanne Pfister, Frank and Linnea Arrington, and Joy and Jim Furby.
