Father’s Day golf effort raises funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation

On Father’s Day week, golfers in San Diego County and around the nation can enjoy a round of golf while helping to fight prostate cancer, a disease that affects more than 2 million American men and their families.

“A Dollars for Dads” — a Father’s Day awareness and fundraising initiative of the Santa Monica-based Prostate Cancer Foundation — will take place the week leading up to and including Father’s Day, June 14 through 20, at 64 public and private golf courses across the country.

Participating golf courses will add one dollar to their greens or other course fees and provide golfers with an opportunity to make additional donations to support prostate cancer research.

Courses managed by Arnold Palmer Golf Management/Century Golf Partners and OB Sports have stepped up again to support the effort, including Doubletree Golf Resort in San Diego.

“Father’s Day is an important time to let our dads know how much they mean to us and others around them, making it a perfect time to raise awareness for prostate cancer and support advanced research to ensure they live long and healthy lives,” said Chris Conway, director of golf programs for the foundation.

“Too many men have been affected by this disease, yet many choose not to talk about it,” Conway said. “Last year the event helped men talk about prostate cancer, and we hope this year will be even more impactful.”

One in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the foundation. This year, more than 196,000 news cases are projected to be diagnosed in the United States, and more than 27,000 American men will die from the disease, the second most prevalent form of cancer for men after skin cancer.
