Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church is holding a one day retreat Saturday, May 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The retreat will include presentations, lunch and celebration of the Eucharist.
Donna Widmer, who heads up the church’s catachetical ministry, said the retreat wil be a great oppoortunity for parishioners to share their experiences of the Eucharist and to see some excellent speakers perform.
With the passing of Pope John Paul II, Widmer said events like this are especially important to Catholics.
“First of all, it’s a day of enrichment,” said Widmer. “And Pope John Paul II asked us to dedicate this year to the Eucharist and to comply with him, we wanted to do something special to celebrate the Eucharist. We wanted to give people kind of an in-depth experience of learning more about what is the core of the Catholic faith.”
Speakers will include Mike McDevitt of Mystical humanity of Christ, an organization that specializes in providing guest speakers for Catholic retreats. McDevitt is known as one of their most popular speakers and Widmer hopes he will bring a good crowd.
Organizers of the event said the retreat should attract not just parishioners from Mary, Star of the Sea, but also from other Catholic churches in La Jolla. Widmer said the church welcomes all-comers regardless of their faith or their denomination.
In addition to the presentations, attendees will have a chance to meet in small groups and share their experiences of the Eucharist. Widmer said this gives people a chance to talk about issues that are important to their spiritual journey, such as coming back to the Eucharist after an absence.
Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided by the church.
