Enjoy the sun; more rain likely

Sunday’s weather was delightful, but rain is in the forecast for Tuesday that should not be as heavy as last week’s storms, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

Today should also be dry, but about an inch of rain is expected along the coast and inland valleys on Tuesday, 1 to 3 inches in the foothills and up to a foot of snow in the mountains above 5,500 feet, said Noel Isla of the NWS.

“This system won’t be as strong as the cold fronts that went through last week,” Isla said.

He said the rain should be over by lunchtime Wednesday.

Temperatures will be similar to last week, but the winds won’t be nearly as strong, Isla said.

He said more rain is in the forecast for next Saturday.

San Diegans took advantage of a break in the weather to flock to the mountains on Sunday where black ice on the roads made mountain driving hazardous in the morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The county Roads Department kept the upper reaches of Sunrise Highway closed to vehicles because of snow, and extremely heavy traffic was reported on state Route 79.
