Election picture comes into focus as filing deadline hits

Horn faces five challengers, Roberts has two

San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn has drawn five potential challengers and Supervisor Ron Roberts two ahead of Friday’s filing deadline for most offices on the June primary ballot.

Roberts is being challenged by San Diego Unified School District board member Sheila Jackson and former San Diego City Council candidate Stephen Whitburn. Horn and Roberts have both been on the board since 1995.

No one has filed to challenge District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who is seeking a third term.

William Betts, an internal auditor, is the only candidate to filed to run against San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister. San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/Clerk David Butler is being challenged by four candidates.

Jim Duffy, a sheriff’s lieutenant, and former Assemblyman Jay LaSuer are running against Sheriff Bill Gore, who was appointed to the position last year by the Board of Supervisors.

The filing period for four San Diego City Council districts has already closed.

Five people filed papers to run against Councilman Kevin Faulconer in District 2. In District 4, three candidates are running to try to unseat Councilman Tony Young.

Six people are running to fill the seat now held by Councilwoman Donna Frye in District 6. Frye is barred from running for reelection because of term limits. District 8 Councilman Ben Hueso is vacating his seat to run for the Assembly. Nine candidates have filed to run for Hueso’s seat.
