UCSD’s DeVries promoted
Henry J. DeVries has been appointed assistant dean for external affairs for UCSD Extension, the continuing education arm of the university.In addition to teaching, the primary duties of his new position are public affairs, fundraising and research, announced Mary Walshok, associate vice chancellor of public programs and dean of Extension.
DeVries, 52, also serves as the public spokesman for Extension. The division educates approximately 54,000 enrollees a year, which translates to more than 22,600 students in more than 4,600 courses.
Talamani gets editing post
UCSD professor Mark A. Talamani, M.D., has been named editor in chief of Surgical Endoscopy, the journal of the Society of American Gastroinestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.The M.J. Orloff chair of the UCSD Medical Center’s surgery department, he is noted for “transforming the world of scarless surgical techniques,” according to David Brenner, M.D., vice chancellor of the Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.
Talamani, who will be primarily responsible for submissions from North and South America and Asia, will share his editorial role with Sir Alfred Cuschieri of the University of Dundee.
