The surfers pulled him to shore at the foot of Grand Avenue and started CPR. Paramedics arrived and confirmed that Gulseth was dead.

San Diego police said his body may have been floating overnight.

Gulseth was wearing a wet suit but police Capt. Christopher Ball said no abandoned surf board was found in the area.
