Drivers should expect delays around airport this weekend

Motorists will have to detour around a portion of the Lindbergh Field driveway in front of Terminal 2 on Friday night and through the weekend, and parts of Harbor Drive will be closed because of construction projects.

The closure in front of Terminal 2 is expected to begin as early as 8 p.m. and last through Sunday, said Steve Schultz, spokesman for the San Diego International Airport.

Construction crews are preparing to demolish the Terminal 2 East pedestrian bridge to make way for a dual-level road as part of the Green Building terminal expansion project.

Motorists will be directed into a minor detour through a parking lot closed during construction. They will not be allowed to pick up or drop off passengers at the curb in front of Terminal 2 East, but they will have access to the pedestrian curb at Terminal 2 West.

Shultz advised travelers to allow extra time to reach their airlines at Terminal 2 East and West this weekend. He added that the demolition schedule could change if it rains.

City work crews connecting a new underground water main also will close sections of Harbor Drive and access to the airport cell phone parking lot for periods of time between 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Crews will block one of three lanes on eastbound Harbor Drive past Spanish Landing and one westbound lane past the Coast Guard station.
