Distraught sailor shoots himself hours before deployment
A five-hour SWAT incident in Tierrasanta ended shortly before midnight with a distraught 24-year-old sailor shooting himself in the head just hours before he was set to deploy, a police sergeant said Thursday.
The standoff developed Wednesday afternoon at the sailor’s home near the intersection of Shields Street and Maddox Drive, according to San Diego police.
The man’s wife called 911 and said he was armed and holed up in the garage following a marital dispute, said SDPD Sgt. David Jennings. He refused to come out for police and SWAT was called in.
About 11:50 p.m., SWAT set off several “flash-bangs” and entered the garage, Jennings said, adding that they found the man sitting in a parked car with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
He was scheduled to deploy for seven months Thursday morning, according to the sergeant.
