County releases disaster guide

By City News Service

A 184-page guide unveiled Thursday is intended to assist San Diego County residents who have lost a home or business to wildfire or other disaster.

The so-called

Red Guide to Recovery

will be given out by firefighters on the scene of a disaster. It contains phone numbers and information on emergency shelters, rentals, insurance, chemical clean-up, land clearance, building contractors, trauma intervention and grief counseling.

The pocket-sized guide was the idea of a community member, Sean Scott, and was created through the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services with help from county Supervisor Bill Horn, the American Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties and the San Diego Fire Chiefs Association.

Funding for the guide came from a $75,000 state grant and a $20,000 contribution by the American Red Cross.
