Country Day rolls to big football victory

La Jolla Country Day secured a 35-0 victory over Escondido Charter on Oct. 9, improving to 4-1 and 2-0 in league play this season.

Quarterback Derek Hatfield led the offense despite battling the flu most of the week, completing five of his six passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns despite three interceptions. He connected with Mical Baily for scoring passes of 12, 13 and 85 yards, and also rushed six times for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Montell Allen totaled 134 yards on 15 rushes, including a 26-yard touchdown run. He also led the defense with 14 tackles. Bailey made eight tackles, including a sack, and Ruben Pena had an interception.

Hunter Khaleghi converted all five of his point-after-touchdown attempts.

The Bishop’s School topped Bishop, 17-14, on Oct. 9. The Knights improved to 4-1 this season.

La Jolla High had a bye.

Girls volleyball

La Jolla beat Scripps Ranch, 25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-10 on Oct. 7, led by Grace Drozda’s 25 kills. Haley Cameron added 13 kills, Ryan Farley had 51 assists, and Waverly Richards had 25 digs.

The Vikings swept Christian on Oct. 9.

Country Day secured a key victory over rival Bishop’s on Oct. 6, beating the Knights, 26-24, 19-25, 28-26, 15-14. For Bishop’s, Thea Derrough had 19 kills, and Ina Kamenova had 44 assists.

The Torreys continued their winning ways with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 win over Francis Parker on Oct. 8.

Bishop’s rebounded from its loss to Country Day with a 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Oct. 8.

Girls golf

La Jolla fell to Our Lady of Peace, 238-276, at Riverwalk Golf Course on Oct. 5 with Juliette Garay leading the Vikings with a score of 38.

On Oct. 10, the Vikings dropped a 230-271 decision to Point Loma at Torrey Pines North Course. Garay shot 41, and Alexis Tarakjian shot a season-low 49.

Country Day beat San Dieguito Academy, 300-359, at Del Mar Country Club on Oct. 5. Kristen Mizutani shot 55 for the Torreys, while Brooke Mehregany and Jennie Kim each carded 57s.

On Oct. 8, the Torreys shot 271 in a three-team match at Riverwalk, equaling the score of Canyon Crest but falling well short of Francis Parker’s 196. Mehregany’s low score of 44 was her best of the season.

Bishop’s rolled to a 227-331 win over San Dieguito Academy at La Jolla Country Club on Oct. 8. Courtney Hooten set a Knights record by scoring 3-under-par 32, thanks to birdies on five of the last seven holes. Spenser Krut eagled the final hole and finished at 1-under-par 35. McKenna Myer shot 42 for the Knights.

Girls tennis

Country Day toppled Bishop’s, 15-3, on Oct. 6. The teams of Lindsey Jacobs/Olivia Hipkins and Katie Woods/Megan Woods each swept their doubles matches for Country Day.

The Torreys toppled Tri-City Christian, 13-5, on Oct. 8. Alaciel Torres swept her three sets in singles, while Woods and Woods swept again in doubles.

Cross country

La Jolla’s girls beat Mission Bay 20-39, in its first league meet on Oct. 7. Zoe Wescoe led the Vikings, finishing second.

At the Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach on Oct. 10, Wescoe finished 26th in the Division II race, covering the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 38 seconds. Tatevick Simovoryan was close behind, finishing 27th in 20:45.

Field hockey

Bishop’s fell to San Marcos, 3-0, on Oct. 6, suffering its fourth straight defeat.
