Country Day, Bishop’s volleyball squads face off in playoffs tonight

The girls’ volleyball teams from La Jolla Country Day and The Bishop’s School both won their first two matches in the CIF State tournament last week, setting up a re-match tonight between the two schools for a chance to play for the Division IV state championship.

The Torreys defeated the Knights earlier this month in the CIF San Diego Section Division IV final, but because the section earns two spots in the state tournament, both teams advanced.

Country Day, seeded first in the Southern California regional, beat Connelly of Anaheim, 25-12, 25-11, 25-9, in the first round on Nov. 24.

The Torreys then topped Central Valley Christian of Visalia, 25-15, 25-16, 25-10, in the second round on Nov. 28.

Bishop’s was seeded second in the SoCal regional and rolled to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-19 victory over Foshay Learning Center of Los Angeles in a Nov. 24 first-round game. Savannah Smith led Bishop’s with nine kills, Claire Reidman had three aces, and Courtney Hoffman added 16 assists.

The Knights rolled to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 win over Whittier Christian in a second-round game on Nov. 28. Kristen Casey totaled 14 kills, Maddie Lord had three aces, and Ina Kamenova contributed 36 assists.
