Council President and First District Councilman Scott Peters, along with Second District Councilman Kevin Faulconer, held a joint press conference in Mission Beach July 22 to announce their support for voter choice on the city’s one-year trial alcohol ban at coastal parks and beaches.
The legislators were joined by families and residents from the beach community, as well as beach area businessowners.
The beach alcohol ban has been controversial, but seems to have contributed to a reduction in arrests and disturbances at area beaches. Fourth of July arrests were at the lowest level in years on San Diego’s northern beaches.
Opponents of the ban say it is unfair, however, to penalize everyone for the misbehaviour of a few.
They also say stricter law enforcement could accomplish what the ban accomplishes.
