After 50 years, La Jolla’s Congregation Beth El celebrated with the entire San Diego community the long-anticipated unveiling of their new sanctuary, May 4. Mayor Jerry Sanders and Robert Wexler, the CEO of American Jewish University, were guest speakers. The community was founded in a small house in Clairemont 50 years ago, and until recently, had worshiped in a community hall. The new sanctuary is Beth El’s first true “sacred space” for religious services. The exterior of the building reflects contemporary design elements and features, while the interior of the sanctuary blends modern design and materials with elements that are reminiscent of Eastern Europe.
