Club to battle root weevil
Loretta Bates, Ph.D., of the Cooperative Extension, University of California, County of San Diego will present a slide show to teach gardeners how to recognize the Diaprepes root weevil in its various life stages at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at La Jolla Lutheran Church, 7117 La Jolla Blvd.
Bates, a guest of the La Jolla Garden Club, will also offer methods for containing and controlling the spread of this destructive pest. The root weevil has an extensive host range (270 plants), which includes citrus, avocado, ornamental trees and shrubs, cactus, perennials, and flowering and foliage plants. Some nearby areas of the city have been quarantined for this weevil.
