Intern“We want to retire the gas lawn mower,” says Ankist Zadeyan, co-owner of Clean Air Lawn Care San Diego.
With gas lawn mowers having been the lawn mower of choice in recent years, this may seem like an ambitious goal, but he and his brother don’t think the idea seems so far-fetched after all.
Ankist Zadeyan and Antranik Zadeyan, natives of La Jolla and alumni of La Jolla High, launched the San Diego franchise of Clean Air Lawn Care this summer with the hopes of providing San Diegans a lawn care service that is environmentally green.
The company uses electrical-powered equipment instead of gas-powered, organic and natural fertilizers in place of chemical pesticides, and special gardening techniques to reduce water usage. And those electric mowers are powered by solar panels atop their truck.
This is important, they argue, considering small motors, such as gas lawn mowers, contribute 5 percent to 10 percent of the nation’s air pollutants. Also, according to the EPA, a gas mower emits the same amount of hydrocarbons in one hour as a sport utility vehicle driven 23,500 miles.
“It’s about going green without losing quality,” says Antranik. “The gains are immeasurable, and the costs are comparable,” adds Ankist.
Besides the environmental benefits, the electric equipment reduces the noise pollution to about 50 percent and eliminates dangerous chemicals to 0 percent, making your yard a safer and more enjoyable place for family and neighbors, they say.
The duo will be holding a green-themed, lawn-chair party from 3 to 6 p.m. July 17. For more information, go to
