Classic Viennese ‘tunes’ to fill concert hall
Austrian composer, conductor and music scholar Gerhard Track will host a Viennese musical celebration, featuring guest soprano Camila Arnold, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in the auditorium of The Neurosciences Institute.
A presentation of the Encinitas-based Hutchins Consort, the concert will feature the music of Mozart, Liszt, Haydn, Lehar and Salieri.
A highlight will be Fritz Kreisler’s popular “Divine Love’s Sorrow,” which was the inspiration for Swami Yogananda’s poem of the same name.
Guests will also hear three arias by the mystical composer Werner Eugen Lardy, taken from his “Der Friedensfuerst,” as well as the romantic fervor of Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 3,” and a new arrangement of a work by Mozart’s rival, Antonio Salieri.
A rare chamber work by Josef Haydn, “Neuberg Trio,” which was partially lost and then reconstructed in the 1970s and reintroduced to the world, will have its U.S. premiere at the concert.
From Mozart’s “Vesperae Solenne,” the aria “Laudate Dominum,” along with Haydn’s aria from “Maria Zeller Messe,” will also be featured in the program, in addition to an aria from Lehar’s “Frederike.”
Between compositions, Track will guide the audience through an historical tour of the Viennese culture drawn from three centuries of tradition. His program will also feature an aria from his own opera, “Minnequa,” which was premiered at the bi-centennial celebration in Colorado.
According to its founders, The Hutchins Consort represents the apex of acoustic violin string invention, and is the only professional ensemble in the world performing on an octet of harmonically matched stringed instruments designed and hand-crafted by American Luthier and acoustic scientist, Dr. Carleen Hutchins. The scope of its musical domain includes classical, baroque, jazz and world music.
