City Council to consider new rules for medical marijuana dispensaries

By City News Service

The San Diego City Council on Monday was scheduled to consider an ordinance aimed at reining in the 125 medical marijuana dispensaries operating in the city.

The proposed ordinance was expected to be similar to one approved in June by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors for unincorporated areas.

The county’s set of rules and zoning regulations for dispensaries states they must be in industrial areas and at least 1,000 feet from homes, schools, churches and playgrounds.

It has been 14 years since California voters passed Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act.
