Children, legends take to the waves
Aloha spirit rocked the beaches Sunday as the 15th annual Luau and Longboard Invitational on Sunday filled the area near Scripps Pier while La Jolla Shores played host to Windansea Surf Club’s 22nd annual Kids Day at the Beach.
Underprivileged children experienced the waves for the first time at the Shores, while competition kicked off the day at the pier, where events raised more than $480,000 for the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
At the “Surfing for the Cure event, Pfizer and other sponsoring companies lent their support and bidders spent big bucks on auction items - like a 9-foot Walden balsa wood board signed by more than 50 of the world’s top surfers. A legion of legendary surfers, including Robert August who starred in the original “Endless Summer” movie, joined the fun.
In all the event, raised more than $480,000 for the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
