Chelsea’s Light baseball tournament tops expectations

A youth baseball tournament on Sunday raised $20,000 for a scholarship in the memory of murdered teenager Chelsea King.

About 60 teams took part in games at sites across the county, including at La Jolla Youth Baseball’s Cliffridge field, and the money was raised by a $350 per team entry fee and merchandise sales. Organizers collected $5,000 more than they’d hoped for.

Chelsea, 17, was raped and strangled in February by John Albert Gardner III, who attacked her as she ran in the hills near Lake Hodges.

Gardner pleaded guilty to murdering Chelsea and Escondido High School freshman Amber Dubois in a separate assault last year.

The Chelsea King Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student at Poway High School.
