Chargers sign Gerald Hayes; Cooper out with biceps injury

Press Release

The Chargers have signed veteran inside linebacker Gerald Hayes to a one-year contract and placed veteran inside linebacker Stephen Cooper on the “Reserve-Injured” list, effective Wednesday, with a biceps injury. Hayes will wear No. 96 for the Chargers.

The 6-1, 250-pound Hayes is in his ninth NFL season. A third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2003, Hayes spent his first eight seasons in Arizona, registering 478 tackles, 5.5 sacks, four interceptions and seven forced fumbles.

A native of Patterson, N.J., Hayes was a three-time first-team All-Big East linebacker at the University of Pittsburgh.

Cooper, also in his ninth NFL season, played in the Chargers’ first five games this season.
