The Del Mar Country Club was aglow in candlelight and alive with a profusion of pink and white flowers recently, when the 77th Annual Candlelight Ball raised funds for Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla.
Supporters entered through a magnificent garland of flowers into a reception area bursting with blossoms. Even the grand chandelier in the main entry was draped in floral bouquets.
For the fourth consecutive year, philanthropist Betty Knight Scripps served as general chairman of the black-tie gala, one of the oldest and most prominent charity events in San Diego. Under her leadership, the ball raised more than $6 million, and this year Scripps contributed a $1.25 million challenge grant to ensure that the Candlelight Ball would continue its amazing success story.
Academy Award-winning actor and former La Jollan Cliff Robertson was the guest of honor at the festive event, and he entertained the large crowd with his wry humor.
La Jolla’s Judith Harris, Robert Singer, Jeanne Jones, Doug and Betsy Manchester, and Stephen and Lyn Krant were honored guests. Also on the guest list were Rosemary and Chris Van Gorder, Cherle and John Engle, Eve and Gary Fybel, Mike and Anne Frager, Don Breitenberg, Steve and Margo Moreland, Kaye and Richard Woltman, and Jocelyn and Richard Vortmann.
