BY RUSS GIBFRIEDLa Jolla’s Bronco All-Star teams were victorious in their respective All-Star tournaments over Memorial Day weekend, with the “A” and “B” teams taking top honors in the annual Tecolote Memorial Day Tournament and the Bronco 11-year-old team taking first place in the Ramona tournament.
For the B team, the win was especially hard-fought. The boys opened the tournament on Saturday afternoon against the host Tecolote team and were on the end of a hard-luck 7-5 loss. They were on the field again early Sunday morning against a very talented Mira Mesa squad. The team started strong behind the pitching of Westin Clark and Nate Gibfried, with La Jolla easily winning 10-0.
In the quarterfinals Monday morning, the B team again faced the Mira Mesa squad. After jumping to a quick 7-0 lead after two innings, the Mira Mesa team members found their bats and chipped away to retake the lead, 8-7, in the fifth inning. Both teams continued to fight with La Jolla on top in the end, 11-10.
In the championship game Monday afternoon, the La Jolla B team again faced the host Tecolote lineup. Behind the pitching of Clark, Gibfried, Tobin Groth and Patrick Skeen, the La Jolla throwers kept the host team in check with one hit over seven innings, while the offense delivered key hits and manufactured runs to give the La Jolla team a 6-0 victory.
“We are extremely proud of these young men,” Coach Robert Waltz said. “They held their composure, and as a team, they played like champions.”
