Bishop’s wins water polo tourney title

The girls water polo team from The Bishop’s School won all four of their games last week in the TYR Cup at El Dorado High School, taking the tournament championship by out-scoring their opponents, 52-8.

The Knights topped Beckman, 17-1, paced by Sammi Peck’s four goals. They then beat El Dorado, 14-2, as Sarah Presant and Jessica Webster each scored four goals.

In the semifinals, Bishop’s swam past San Marcos of Santa Barbara, 14-2, and Kirsten Siegel totaled six goals.

The Knights bested Fountain Valley, 7-3, in the title game, as Peck and Kristen Casey each scored twice. Presant was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Peck, Siegel and Melanie Boehrig were selected to the all-tournament team and Gabby Stone was named the most outstanding goalie.

La Jolla High toppled La Costa Canyon, 17-5, on Jan. 16. Ariel Arcidiacono led the way with four goals, while Kate Woods and Bridgette Souza each added three.

Boys basketball

La Jolla fell to Mission Bay, 67-62, on Jan. 12 and then rebounded with a 52-34 win over Cathedral Catholic on Jan. 15.

La Jolla Country Day fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 46-36, on Jan. 15.

The Bishop’s School beat Santa Fe Christian, 57-28, on Jan. 13, led by Maliik Love’s 21 points and 11 rebounds. Stephen Kaiser added 13 points for the Knights.

Bishop’s topped Horizon Christian, 54-32, on Jan. 15, as Ryan Chong poured in 18 points in the winning effort.

Girls basketball

La Jolla dropped a 51-46 decision to Mission Bay on Jan. 12.

Country Day eased to a 64-20 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 15. Maya Hood led the way with a 16-point effort, and Ariana Elegado added 15 points and 10 assists. Teesha Solomon had 12 points, and Kelsey Plum added 11.

The Torreys edged Beverly Hills, 58-49, in the Beverly Hills Showcase on Jan. 16. Solomon scored 16 points, and Hood had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Elegado chipped in with 13 points and 13 assists.

Bishop’s eased to a 79-40 win over Santa Fe Christian on Jan. 13. Briana Martinez scored 14 points and had 16 rebounds. Elaina White, Devon Roeper and Alissa Campanero also scored in double figures for the Knights.

The Knights had little trouble in toppling Horizon Christian, 73-32, on Jan. 15.

Boys soccer

Country Day rolled to a 5-1 victory over Guajome Park Academy on Jan. 12. Alex Fleischhacker scored a hat trick for the Torreys, while Lee Klitzner and Dennis Roth each scored once. Roth added a pair of assists.

The Torreys fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 3-1, on Jan. 14. Fleischhacker scored their lone goal, on a penalty kick.

Bishop’s kicked to a 1-1 tie with San Dieguito Academy on Jan. 11. Stefano Vidaldi scored the Knights’ only goal.

Bishop’s secured a 5-1 victory over Horizon Christian on Jan. 17. Kyle Jester and Harrison Flagg each had a goal and an assist for the Knights, while Bishop’s also got single goals from Matt Harris, Bobby Pousti and Vidaldi.

Girls soccer

Country Day played to a scoreless draw with San Marcos on Jan. 11. The Torreys, who were missing two players to a school-sponsored trip and others to injury and illness, moved to 3-2-2 this season.

The Torreys fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 3-1, on Jan. 14. Ariana Paradise scored Country Day’s only goal, on the rebound of a Kelly Mordente shot from 25 yards out. Center midfielders Aleena Young and Ana Cruz sparked the offense, coach Dave Jenkins said, but it wasn’t enough.

Bishop’s topped Rancho Bernardo, 3-0, on Jan. 12. Geny Decker had a goal and an assist.

The Knights ran past Horizon Christian, 6-0, on Jan. 14 when Sarah Noble scored twice. Devan Osegueda and Coral Hasley split the shutout in goal.

Roller hockey

Country Day rolled to an 11-2 victory over Southwest. Sam Brink paced the Torreys with two goals and four assists, while James Owsiany scored four goals and Ryan Owsiany added two. Zach Feldman scored twice, and Scott Ibsen tallied one.

The Torreys fell to Rancho Bernardo, 7-2, on Jan. 13, despite out-shooting the Broncos.
