Bishop’s volleyball prevails over Cathedral Catholic

Volleyball

The Knights (11-3 overall, 1-0 Coastal League) started the week out with a loss at Torrey Pines, but Thursday, hosted Cathedral Catholic and prevailed in a five-set match — 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 12-25,15-10.

Kristen Casey was solid with 18 kills, while A.J. Kiyoizumi led with four aces. Kelly McPherson led the offense with 43 assists.

On Friday, the Knights also beat Francis Parker in four sets —25-23, 16-25, 25-21, 25-16. Maddie Lord led the way with 18 kills and Claire Manhard chipped in 10 kills and three aces.

Football

The Bishop’s football team keeps on rolling. Last week the Knights topped Mission Bay, 33-14 to stay undefeated on the season and now sports a 4-0 record. Up next is a battle with Bishop High School, which also has an impressive 4-0 season record. The Knights host the Broncos on Friday night.

Girls golf

Last week the Knights defeated La Jolla Country Day. No other information was available.

LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY

Football

La Jolla Country Day (1-0, 2-2), playing without seven players who have been suspended for two games for breaking team rules, defeated Vincent Memorial (0-1, 1-3) 26-20 in overtime. In addition to the seven players being held out, the Torreys were playing without senior team captain, MLB/TE Mical Bailey who is out for the season with a knee injury.

Down 20-13 late in the fourth quarter the Torreys marched the length of the field to tie the game at 20. The key play in the drive was a 44-yard pass from quarterback Ruben Pena to Tyler Sheflo who was one of the young players pulled up from the JV team for the contest.

The Torrey defense quickly forced a Vincent Memorial punt and the offense was able to get the ball close enough to attempt a game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining in the game but kicker Hunter Khaleghi’s kick was wide right. Vincent Memorial won the coin toss to start overtime and elected to go on defense.

Starting on the 25-yard line, the Torreys drove to the 2-yard line before Pena punched it in to put the team up 26-20. The Torreys missed the PAT, but held Vincent Memorial scoreless to win the game.

Volleyball

The Torreys had a good week, winning two matches and losing one. After taking a week off, the Torreys played San Pasqual last Tuesday and came away with a 3-0 victory.

Lauren Birks led the team with 13 kills, followed by Mollie Rogers with 11 and Gillian Howard with 8. Birks also had 12 digs and Howard had six blocks. Chloe Mathis had 23 assists. The team also played La Costa Canyon and was defeated 3-0.

Friday the team played their first league game against Tri City Christian and came away with a 3-0 victory. Mathis had 29 assists while Kendall Peterkin had eight kills and five blocks.

This week the Torreys play Cathedral Catholic and Bishops. Both matches are at home.

Golf

The Torreys had a week off and faced powerful Bishop’s at the La Jolla Country Club last week and stumbled to their highest total of the year by nearly 30 strokes. Sophomore Kristen Mizutani led the Torreys with a 49 as the team had difficulty with the very speedy greens at La Jolla. The team also played at Escondido Charter at Eagle Crest Golf Course.

The Torreys improved on their previous day’s score and shot a respectable 268.

Sophomore Kristen Mizutani shot a match low of 41, and she was capably supported by Natasha Moss, 50, and Frances Kim with a 55. On the season, the Torreys have an overall record of 4-3 and are 1-1 in Coastal League action. This week the Torreys take on La Costa Canyon and The Bishop’s School.

LA JOLLA HIGH

Varsity football

The Vikings lost 31-13 to Santa Fe Christian last week, falling to 0-5 on the season. Up next is a home game against Point Loma. La Jolla quarterback Bobby Schuman was 3-for-11 on the game for 97 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Volleyball

The Knights (4-9 overall) dropped both of their matches last week to Orange Lutheran and Scripps Ranch. This week the team will take on Christian (El Cajon), Point Loma and University City.
