Bishop’s to race in Cardinal Regatta
Since opening the new year at the 25th Annual Rose Bowl Regatta, The Bishop’s School sailing team has been holding twice-weekly practices.
This weekend they will race in the Cardinal Regatta, hosted by Stanford University and at the Sequoia Yacht Club.
“Our biggest challenge right now is finding some consistency, and that takes nothing else but time on the water,” said coach Aine McLean, adding that the team is looking very strong. “Practicing maneuvers, starts and mark-roundings, helps develop a tactical and strategic maturity that comes with experience. I expect some very good results as we head into the second half of the season.”
They started the year with the Jan. 2-3 regatta at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach that was hosted by the University of Southern California. Twenty-seven colleges from the East Coast to Hawaii and 54 high school teams from throughout California raced in the nation’s largest combined scholastic sailing competition. Bishop’s competed along with local teams from Cathedral Catholic, Point Loma, Torrey Pines, Francis Parker and La Jolla High School.
Based out of the San Diego Yacht Club, Bishop’s team include skippers John Cappetta, Katy Carlyle, Zack Downing and Noelle Herring, and crew members Alex Beacham, John Iaia, Jessie O’Dell, Katie Thies, Alex White and team captain Spencer Dicks. Bishop’s alumnus Gene Merewether ’09 represented Princeton University.
Bishop’s sailors participated in a total of 24 races under cool and clear skies with very light winds. In the Silver standings, Bishop’s placed eighth out of 27 high school teams.
