Bishop’s School students honored

Bishop’s School students Alexandra and Nicholas Appel of La Jolla recently were honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

Alexandra, 14 and an eighth-grader, and Nicholas, 12 and a seventh grader, were invited to the event at the University of San Diego’s Shiley Theater based on their exceptional performance on rigorous, above-grade-level tests for the 2010 academic year. Both received Awards for High Honors in Mathematics and Verbal. Nicholas also received a Spatial Ability Award and he received the first place award for SCAT Verbal in the State of California.

The tests are given to second through eighth grade Talent Search participants.

In 2009-10 alone, over 53,000 students from 21 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Talent Searches offered through CTY.

Besides being an avid reader, Alexandra enjoys theatre, oil painting, piano, tennis, and volleyball; is part of the Bishop’s Singing Club and plays the violin in the school’s orchestra, according to her mother Cassandra Wong.

Wong noted that Nicholas is a ranked Southern California Junior tennis player. He also plays piano, cello and his favorite subjects are mathematics and science.
