Bishop’s heading to championships

ContributorFor the third time in as many years, the football team from The Bishop’s School is heading to the CIF San Diego Section Division V championship game at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Knights secured a berth in the title game by escaping with a 28-27 victory over Christian in their semifinal game on Dec. 4. Third-seeded Bishop’s (8-4) will face No. 1 seed Francis Parker (10-2) for the championship at the Chargers’ home field Friday at 10 a.m.
The Knights lost to Francis Parker at Qualcomm last year, and won their only Division V championship the year before, beating Christian.
Bishop’s led its semifinal game, 28-14, after three quarters. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns got Christian within an extra-point attempt of tying the game, but the Knights’ A.J. Chedrick blocked the PAT attempt.
Alec Fisher paced the Knights with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, and Chedrick added 73 yards on 16 rushes. Hector Eribez completed six of his nine passes for 141 yards and a touchdown, to Adam Malkiewicz.
Austin Fisher led the defense with 14 tackles, and Alec Fisher had 12.
La Jolla Country Day lost its semifinal game to Parker, 42-14, on Dec. 4. The Torreys, seeded fourth, finished their season with a 10-2 record and missed a chance to advance to a championship game for the first time since 2004 (when they won their third straight Eight-man division title).
Montell Allen led the Torreys with 25 carries for 124 yards. Ruben Pena completed seven of 15 passes for 103 yards, a touchdown (to Anthony Torres) and an interception, and Derek Hatfield connected with Connor Gerhart for a fourth-quarter TD while totaling 57 yards through the air and on the ground.
Allen’s 13 tackles paced the defense, and Pena had eight. Sage Burmeister caused a fumble.
