Bishop’s golfers earn All-League recognition

In a match that served as the Coast League individual tournament, Bishop’s beat Francis Parker, 212-213, on Oct. 28.

Courtney Hooton placed first with an 18-hole score of 70. Spenser Krut was second at 76. Both players earned All-League honors, and Hooton was the league’s player of the year.

The day before, Bishop’s secured a 203-276 win over Country Day at La Jolla Country Club when Krut led the Knights with a 35, Hooton carded a 41, and Alexa Bisbas shot 42. Kristin Mizutani shot a 41 for the Torreys.

Country Day fell to Francis Parker, 224-295, on Oct. 26 at Del Mar Country Club. Mizutani shot a 44.

La Jolla beat University City, 276-323, at Torrey Pines North on Oct. 27. Juliette Garay shot 41.

On Oct. 29, the Vikings fell to Coronado, 252-282, at Coronado Golf Course. Alexis Tarakjian had La Jolla’s low, a 48.

Football

La Jolla High School fell to Mission Bay, 54-14, on Oct. 30, leaving the Vikings at 3-5 for the year. Tyler Bassler scored on a 3-yard run for the Vikings, and Zac Zlatic completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Joe Panek.

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a key 48-21 victory over Tri-City Christian on Oct. 30.

Montell Allen led the Torreys’ offense, rushing 17 times for 185 yards and four touchdowns. He also made 10 tackles for a Torreys defense that held TCC to 51 rushing yards. Mical Bailey totaled 11 tackles, and Sage Burmeister and Austin Rooke each had an interception.

Backup quarterback Ruben Pena completed six of his 13 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Bishop’s beat Horizon Christian, 53-34, on Oct. 31.

Girls volleyball

Bishop’s topped Canyon Crest Academy, 26-24, 25-10, 25-14, on Oct. 27. Maddie Lord totaled 13 kills and eight aces, while Ina Kamenova had 28 assists.

The Knights toppled Francis Parker, 24-26, 28-26, 25-14, 25-20, on Oct. 29. Kristen Casey had 19 kills, and Thea Derrough added 13.

Cross country

Country Day boys team won a Coastal League South cluster meet Oct. 29 at Mission Bay Park, scoring 31 points to second-place Bishop’s, with 50.

Dennis Roth led the Torreys, finishing third in 17 minutes, 10 seconds over a 3.1-mile course. Alex Fleischhacker was fourth in 17:22, followed by Noah Wolfenzon (sixth, 17:30), Lee Klitzner (seventh, 17:31) and Jake Mack (11th, 18:20).

Will Wilde Botta of Bishop’s was the first individual across the line, in 17:02, and teammate Hoagie Hoagland was second in 17:19.

Country Day’s girls placed third at the same meet. Sam Staszak led the team by placing eighth in 21:26, Maggie Taylor was 11th in 22:27, and Lily Wolfenzon was 12th in 22:32.

Bishop’s placed second in the girls’ race, with Lauren Collins the first individual to finish, in 10:34.

La Jolla fell to Cathedral Catholic, 15-50, on Oct. 28. Tetevick Simavoryan was the Vikings’ first finisher, in 20:16, and Megan Carroll was right behind in 20:19.

Girls tennis

Country Day topped Bishop’s, 15-3, on Oct. 29, finishing the regular season undefeated. For the Torreys, Sophie Najera, Elena Najera and Lindsey Kostas swept in singles.

Field hockey

Bishop’s topped Point Loma, 1-0, on Oct. 27. Becca Chien scored, and Carrie Clowney and Joy Hermes split the shutout in goal.

The Knights fell to Scripps Ranch, 8-0, on Oct. 29.
