Bishop’s girls volleyball falls in regional final

Girls’ volleyball

The Bishop’s School fell one victory short of its goal of reaching a state championship. The Knights lost in the CIF State Division IV Southern California regional final on Dec. 2, falling to eventual state champion Santa Fe Christian, 27-25, 25-11, 25-18.

The Knights had beaten the Eagles for the CIF San Diego Section Division IV championship 10 days earlier, and had toppled Santa Fe Christian in two of the teams’ previous three meetings this season, but their opponent made some key changes to its attack in the teams’ fourth meeting.

“This is a great group of girls, and they fought all year,” Bishop’s coach Tod Mattox said after the game. “We served and passed better than them in the section final, and tonight, they served and passed better.”

Girls’ basketball

The Bishop’s School eased to a 71-30 victory over Sweewater on Dec. 2.

The Knights continued to roll with a 72-35 win over Cathedral Catholic on Dec. 6.

La Jolla High School fell to Westview, 55-44, on Dec. 1. Valerie Nawahine led the Vikings with 13 points, and Natallia Cravens had 10.

The Knights dropped a Dec. 5 game to Horizon Christian, 45-36. Nawahine totaled 10 points in the defeat.

La Jolla Country Day topped Christian Life, 61-37, in the LJCD Sweet Sixteen Invitational on Dec. 3.

The Torreys fell to Eastlake, 50-49, on Dec. 4. They rebounded with a 49-40 win over Modesto Christian on Dec. 5. They fell to Mater Dei, 60-58, in the fifth-place game on Dec. 6.

Boys’ basketball

La Jolla High School opened its season with a 56-35 victory over Mt. Carmel on Dec. 3 in the Eastlake Titan tournament.

The Vikings fell in overtime to Hoover, one of the top-ranked teams in San Diego County, 67-59, on Dec. 5. Jack Latta led the Vikings with 16 points, and Tyler Heap contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds. Alec Giusti scored 12 points and had six rebounds.

La Jolla Country Day suffered a 50-49 defeat to San Marcos in the Raven Tipoff tournament on Dec. 3.

The Torreys rebounded with a 63-49 win over Irvine in the same tournament on Dec. 4.

Country Day fell to Patrick Henry, 73-72, on Dec. 5.

Boys’ soccer

La Jolla Country Day eased to a 7-3 victory over Escondido Charter on Dec. 5. The Torreys scored in the game’s first minute and never looked back. Zach Wolfenzon and Rodrigo Cuenca each scored two goals, and Kees Thompson, Alex Fleischhacker and Hunter Khaleghi all scored once.

La Jolla High School fell to Rancho Bernardo in it season opener, 1-0, on Dec. 2.

The Vikings responded with a 1-1 tie in their Dec. 4 game against Bonita Vista in the Coronado tournament.

Girls’ soccer

La Jolla Country Day won its season opener, beating Apple Valley, 2-0, in the Baron’s tournament on Dec. 6. Allie Hieb scored a first-half goal, and Sierra Ferreira added an insurance tally midway through the second half. Sophomore Rachel Locke recorded her first varsity shutout in goal, Country Day coach David Jenkins said.

La Jolla High School secured a 2-1 win over Carlsbad to open its season on Dec. 1. Brianna Chapman and Amanda Beary scored for the Vikings.

The Vikings kicked to a scoreless draw with San Pasqual Academy on Dec. 4 in the Butch Lee Classic tournament.

La Jolla rolled to a 3-0 win over Carlsbad in another tournament game on Dec. 5. Beary, Nihal Kayali and Nicole Bakke all scored single goals.

The Vikings suffered a 4-0 loss to San Clemente in a tournament game on Dec. 6.

Girls’ water polo

The Bishop’s School swam to an easy 18-2 victory over University City to open its season on Dec. 2. Sarah Presant led the Knights with five goals, while Dominique Sardo scored four and Lexi Bohlmeijer had three. Claryann Olofson-Loo recorded seven saves, and Gabby Stone had five.

Wrestling

La Jolla High School got some solid results out of its freshman class in a meet at Laguna Hills High on Dec. 6. Todd Christy won the 103-poind weight class, and Peter Donchev placed second at 135 pounds.

The Vikings also sent a complement of girls’ wrestlers to a meet at El Camino High, and all returned home with medals. Fabiola Zirino (120) and Fabiola Zirino (146) placed third in their weight classes, and Denise Moran (114) and Cora Alvarado (165) placed fourth.

Roller hockey

La Jolla Country Day suffered an 11-0 defeat to Westview in its season opener on Dec. 1.

The Torreys bounced back with a 5-1 win over St. Augustine on Dec. 3. Ben Sweeney led the scoring with a hat trick, and James Owsiany scored had goals and three assists. Cameron Eibl, Joey Sowka and Cameron Sowka each chipped in with an assist.

The Knights shoot for their second straight CIF San Diego Section Division V championship. Last year, they went undefeated. This year, they entered the playoffs unseeded and with a 4-6 record. They’ll face off against the top seed and a team that hasn’t lost since the first week of the season.
