Bishop’s football secures win over Escondido Charter

The Bishop’s School eased to a 29-6 win over Escondido Charter on Oct. 10, improving to 4-2 this season as it heads into the Coastal League play portion of its schedule.The Knights have allowed 16 points or less in each of their four victories this fall.
Freshman quarterback Joey Moreno led the way on offense, completing nine of his 15 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Jensen caught four passes for 39 yards while also carrying the ball three times for 37 yards and a score. He made eight tackles on defense.
La Jolla Country Day suffered a 23-13 defeat to Boulder City, Nev. on Oct. 10, and even worse, suffered a rash of injuries to some of its key players in its second consecutive loss. They stand at 3-2.
The Torreys lost starting quarterback Derek Hatfield to an ankle sprain in the first quarter, and backup Ruben Pena went down with a sprained ankle in the second quarter, leaving the signal-calling duties in the hands of junior varsity quarterback Grayson Tucker. Wide receiver/safety Shonta Chiloux also broke his wrist.
Still, they made it close, getting to within four points of the visitors before a fourth-quarter touchdown pass put the game out of reach.
Montell Allen led the Torreys with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, and his 14 tackles were tops on the team. Junior Togiaso made six tackles and blocked a point-after-touchdown kick. Blake Mohesni and Doug Rogers each added seven tackles and a sack.
Girls’ volleyball
The Bishop’s School beat San Dieguito Academy in a three-game sweep on Oct. 7. The Knights also swept Horizon Christian on Oct. 8, improving their season record to 8-5.La Jolla Country Day toppled Christian of El Cajon, three games to none, on Oct. 8, moving to 13-3 this season.
La Jolla High School eased past University City, 25-15, 25-23, 25-16, on Oct. 8.
Cross country
La Jolla High School’s girls’ team ran to easy victories in a three-team meet with Mission Bay and Hoover on Oct. 7 at Balboa Park’s Morley Field. The Vikings beat Mission Bay, 19-44, and topped Hoover, 15-50. La Jolla’s Nihal Kayali was the top individual, covering a 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 52 seconds.Girls’ golf
The Bishop’s School eased to a 210-297 victory over rival La Jolla Country Day on Oct. 7 at La Jolla Country Club. Courtney Hooton recorded the Knights’ low score of the round, shooting 1-over-par 37. Libby Hooton carded a 40, and Spenser Krut came in at 42. Bishop’s improved to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.Field hockey
